1944 saw the publication of The Road to Serfdom by Friedrich von Hayek.
The Road to Serfdom is a book written by the Austrian-born economist and philosopher Friedrich von Hayek (1899–1992) between 1940–1943, in which he “warned of the danger of tyranny that inevitably results from government control of economic decision-making through central planning”, and in which he argues that the abandonment of individualism and classical liberalism inevitably leads to a loss of freedom, the creation of an oppressive society, the tyranny of a dictator and the serfdom of the individual.
Significantly, Hayek challenged the general view among British academics that fascism was a capitalist reaction against socialism, instead arguing that fascism and socialism had common roots in central economic planning and the power of the state over the individual.
A cartoon version of The Road to Serfdom was subsequently published by General Motors which clearly depicts the press declaring The World is Flat.
Roll forward 70 years and Detroit is decaying.
Roll forward 70 years and General Motors has become Government Motors.
Roll forward 70 years and The World is Flat has become Climate Change.
Roll forward 70 years and we have central economic planning where the state exerts power over the individual to save them from themselves i.e. Manmade Climate Change.
Roll forward 70 years and science has become the opiate of the people.
“Religion is the opium of the people” is one of the most frequently paraphrased statements of German economist Karl Marx. It was translated from the German original, “Die Religion … ist das Opium des Volkes” and is often rendered as “religion… is the opiate of the masses.”
Roll forward 70 years and saving your soul has been replaced by saving the planet.
Scientific understanding of the cause of global warming has been increasing. In its fourth assessment (AR4 2007) of the relevant scientific literature, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reported that scientists were more than 90% certain that most of global warming was being caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases produced by human activities.
Roll forward 70 years and we have entered the realm of eco-fascism.
Roll forward 70 years and we are two pages away from the end of The Road to Surfdom.
