The science of propaganda has a long history.
Propaganda is a form of communication aimed towards influencing the attitude of a population toward some cause or position.
Propaganda is information that is not impartial and used primarily to influence an audience and further an agenda, often by presenting facts selectively (thus possibly lying by omission) to encourage a particular synthesis, or using loaded messages to produce an emotional rather than rational response to the information presented. Propaganda can be used as a form of ideological or commercial warfare.
Primitive forms of propaganda have been a human activity as far back as reliable recorded evidence exists.
The big lie is a well established propaganda technique based upon the idea that if a lie is repeated often enough people will believe the lie and that the liar will also come to believe in it.
A big lie is a propaganda technique.
The expression was coined by Adolf Hitler, when he dictated his 1925 book Mein Kampf, about the use of a lie so “colossal” that no one would believe that someone “could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously.”
Later, Joseph Goebbels put forth a slightly different theory which has come to be more commonly associated with the expression “big lie.”
Goebbels wrote the following paragraph in an article dated 12 January 1941, 16 years after Hitler’s first use of the phrase.
The article, titled Aus Churchills Lügenfabrik (English: “From Churchill’s Lie Factory”) was published in Die Zeit ohne Beispiel.
The essential English leadership secret does not depend on particular intelligence.
Rather, it depends on a remarkably stupid thick-headedness.
The English follow the principle that when one lies, one should lie big, and stick to it.
They keep up their lies, even at the risk of looking ridiculous.
The big lie is a technique favoured by the mainstream media where they [generally] attempt to build a reputation for honest reporting so that the occasional big lie will be more readily believed by the consumers of news and current affairs.
Currently, the western mainstream media is embroiled in a propaganda war against Russia over the Ukraine.
Propaganda is a powerful weapon in war; it is used to dehumanize and create hatred toward a supposed enemy, either internal or external, by creating a false image in the mind.
This can be done by using derogatory or racist terms, avoiding some words or by making allegations of enemy atrocities.
Most propaganda wars require the home population to feel the enemy has inflicted an injustice, which may be fictitious or may be based on facts.
The home population must also decide that the cause of their nation is just.
Probably the first big lie [in this context] was the assurance that “NATO will not expand one inch to the east.”.
The Russians insist that NATO expansion violated an explicit promise made by the first Bush administration; the Americans have not only denied it, but seem quite unaware of how much this dispute has haunted U.S. dealings with Russia.
During a trip to Moscow, Mikhail Gorbachev, the last Soviet leader, told me that during his 1990 negotiations with U.S. Secretary of State James Baker about Germany’s reunification and the removal of 300,000 Soviet troops from East Germany, the Russians made it clear that they didn’t want German reunification within NATO.
The negotiations went back and forth with little progress.
Finally, according to Gorbachev, Baker looked at him directly and said, “Look, if you remove your troops and allow unification of Germany in NATO, NATO will not expand one inch to the east.”
A Diplomatic Mystery – 24 August 2009 – Bill Bradley
After its formation in 1949, NATO grew by including Greece and Turkey in 1952 and West Germany in 1955, and then later Spain in 1982. After the Cold War ended, and Germany reunited in 1990, there was a debate in NATO about continued expansion eastward. In 1999, Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic joined the organization, amid much debate within the organization and Russian opposition. Another expansion came with the accession of seven Central and Eastern European countries: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, and Romania. These nations were first invited to start talks of membership during the 2002 Prague summit, and joined NATO on 29 March 2004, shortly before the 2004 Istanbul summit. Most recently, Albania and Croatia joined on 1 April 2009, shortly before the 2009 Strasbourg–Kehl summit.
Future expansion is currently a topic of debate in many countries. Cyprus and Macedonia are stalled from accession by, respectively, Turkey and Greece, pending the resolution of disputes between them. Other countries which have a stated goal of eventually joining include Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Georgia. The incorporation of countries formerly in the Soviet sphere of influence has been a cause of increased tension between NATO countries and Russia.
Mikhail Gorbachev reportedly agreed to allow German reunification within NATO after being promised that NATO would not expand “one inch to the east.”
The big omission is another technique favoured by the mainstream media which [in this context] has failed to report upon the western destabilisation of Ukraine.
A leaked phone conversation between Victoria Nuland, assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs, and Geoffrey Pyatt, the US ambassador to Ukraine, has exposed the anti-democratic and colonialist character of the Obama administration’s intervention in the former Soviet republic.
The discussion between the two officials includes a detailed review of which right-wing opposition figures Washington is working to install in office, and how it is using the United Nations to rubber-stamp the operation.
While Germany and other European powers have worked closely with the Obama administration in promoting the violent protests against President Viktor Yanukovych, the leaked phone call reveals tensions between the imperialist powers.
At one point Nuland tells Pyatt, “Fuck the EU.”
US Regime-Change Operation in Ukraine Exposed in Leaked Diplomatic Phone Call
Patrick O’Connor – 7 February 2014 – Global Research
Yesterday’s leak of the flagrant telephone talk between the US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and the US Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey R. Pyatt has already hit the international media headlines.
In short, it turned out that the US officials were coordinating their actions on how to install a puppet government in Ukraine.
US-EU Clash on How to Install a Puppet Regime in Ukraine. Victoria Nuland

The US is strongly pushing the Ukraine EU integration just as it had been behind the 2004 failed “Orange Revolution” to split Ukraine from Russia in a bid to isolate and weaken Russia.
Now Ukrainians have found evidence of direct involvement of the Belgrade US-financed training group, CANVAS behind the carefully-orchestrated Kiev protests.
F. William Engdahl – 16 March 2014 – Global Research
However, on the Commission’s own Financial Transparency System, the full spending figures are disclosed for the period 2007-2013 inclusive.
Adding each year (collated above), we come to the grand total of €434,918,585, and that for seven years rather than the ten in which the Commission says €31 million was disbursed.
This is the extent of the “bribe” being paid to Ukrainians, and it follows that recipients will be beholden to the European Union and will tend to support it.
There can be no doubt that the EU is attempting to buy favour but, since it is so proud of its support for the Ukrainians, one wonders why it feels the need to lie about the extent of its backing.
EU politics: concealing the Ukrainian bribes

The latest coordinated barrage of big lies was initiated in the western media when they asserted that flight MH17 was downed by Russia [based upon zero evidence].
Perhaps prior to the official war declaration our politicians and media can tell us where the remains of the BUK rocket are that’s alleged to have downed MH17, where the contents are of the black boxes, and where the Air Traffic Control conversations with the pilots are which were allegedly confiscated by the Ukraine secret service on July 17.
It’s perhaps hard to remember due to the misinformation tsunami, but the MH17 has been a major driver of the western public’s anger vs Russia, and their acceptance of sanctions and other decisions, and now the threat of war. While it still may just as well not have been the Donbass rebels who shot that plane, but the Ukraine army, or Blackwater or the CIA. We simply don’t know.
The west says that the war in east Ukraine is caused by Russia’s support for the rebels. Just like the overriding narrative today is that the west reacts to what Russia does, while in reality it’s the other way around.
The entire Ukraine conflict could be resolved tomorrow morning if Kiev, and its western support, would pledge to stop waging war on the Donbass. And give it a separate status, either within Ukraine or in a separate state. After half a year+ of warfare, how else could you resolve this crisis? Only through more bloodshed, that’s how.
But our western leadership is simply too trigger happy for comfort. Based on only hints and allegations. There’s a NATO conference in Wales this week; Obama, Merkel, they’ll all be there. I suggest you just watch and listen what comes out of that. It won’t be pretty. Peace will not be a commonly used term there. While for all of us, and all the civilians in the Donbass, that’s all we want.
But these clowns are dragging us into war. And yes, maybe it would be a good idea for you to tell them that you don’t want them to. Before your kids, or their friends, their neighbors, start dying in some far away ugly theater they should never have been part of.
Is peace impossible in Ukraine today? No. Not at all. But it is as long as the west keeps its hopes for conquering the Donbass alive. It should have known that from the start, and perhaps it did, and started this crusade anyway, because the grand prize it’s after is Russia itself. Over our dead bodies.
These Clowns Are Dragging Us Into War
The Automatic Earth – 31 August 2014
The situation in eastern Ukraine and involving the Russian aid convey is a classic example of how propaganda can be used to turn white into black.
The way it worked is this; the humanitarian situation for countless thousands of people holed up in big cities in eastern Ukraine, like Donetsk and Luhansk, is dire. They have been relentlessly shelled and have little or no electricity, food or water. Many are these people are either Russian speaking or of Russian descent, so it is natural for Russia to want to go to their aid. So Russia went to the trouble and expense of organizing a big relief convoy.
The controlled Western media have downplayed this crisis which affects countless thousands, hardly reporting on it at all, but they have had plenty of airtime – much more – for one American reporter gruesomely executed by a British Jihadist. They have done this because they don’t want people to be aware of the attacks being carried by the Ukraine government against its own people, which they back, and they don’t want people to understand the reason for the Russian aid convoy, so that they can then misrepresent the reasons for the aid convoy. The allegations by the Western media that the aid convoy has military objectives is absurd – you don’t need to be a truck driver to know that it’s very difficult to squeeze a tank or an armored troop carrier into an average sized truck. The protest that Russia is “violating Ukraine’s territorial integrity” by driving the trucks on through without permission is hypocritical cant and humbug, especially coming from a country that invaded Iraq on false pretenses, the mythical “weapons of mass destruction”.
If Kiev wasn’t massacring its own citizens in eastern Ukraine, the aid convoy wouldn’t be necessary, and the reason that the trucks pressed on into Ukraine is that they were being deliberately messed about for a week at the border, when vetting the trucks should have taken 2 days maximum. So there you see a fine example of propaganda by omission, the purpose being to misrepresent the objectives of the Russian aid convoy, in order to present it as an act of aggression by Russia and therefore as a justification for a further tightening of sanctions.
Let’s go back to first principles for a moment and ask ourselves why the US is so concerned about what happens in the Ukraine, which is a country on the other side of the world from the US and therefore none of its business, unless that is it fancies itself as the new Roman Empire – perhaps Barack Obama believes himself to be a latter day Julius Caesar, which conjures up the vision of him entering Congress as if it was the Coliseum, dressed in a white robe and sandals, with a laurel wreath on his head. The US does in fact command an empire, and uses the dollar reserve currency system and its massive military to control its dominions, punishing severely any that try to break out of it. However, its dominions do not include China and Russia, which cannot be subjugated due to their big economies and their ability to physically defend themselves with nukes, if need be, and they are destined to dethrone the dollar and collapse the empire, which is completely rotted out internally, stricken as it is with massive debts and hopelessly corrupt government, as evidenced by the recent train of deplorable leaders.
It is hard to overstate the stupidity of Europe in toadying to the US and imposing sanctions on Russia (in other words starting a trade war). Russia is not some Third World banana republic, it is an important world power, and the act of imposing sanctions on it by Europe and the US is a gross insult and extreme provocation that will have disastrous consequences, particularly since it is now allied with China, with which it will now work assiduously to completely bypass the dollar. China knows that if the US succeeds in destroying Russia economically and subjugating it, then it’s next, so we can expect China and Russia to forge a very powerful alliance. Europe’s economy is already extremely fragile, and it stands to lose far more over the short to medium-term than the US by picking a fight it can’t win with its huge neighbor. Europe now faces a plunging currency and disintegration with the rise of far right political parties leading eventually to tribal wars – European countries have a long tradition of idiotic destructive attritional wars. Russia will probably get along alright, with its big internal economy and new trade agreements with China.
The rabid propaganda now being bandied about in Western media, especially with respect to Russia, is so crude and primitive that it would have even made the Nazi propaganda maestro, Dr Goebbels, blush with embarrassment, and you couldn’t accuse him of underestimating the stupidity of the masses. We haven’t seen this sort of thing since before the 2nd World War. What does it mean? – it means that the Western elites are DESPERATE, desperate in the face of a looming collapse of the dollar caused by its losing its reserve currency status – so desperate that you can practically see the perspiration running down their faces. It’s true that the dollar is rallying now temporarily because of the gathering collapse of Europe, and may continue to benefit from this for a while, and possibly soon from stockmarket liquidation too, but they are looking beyond that. Once the dollar goes their empire is finished – it will no longer be possible to maintain careening astronomic deficits, there will be no more limitless funds for the military machine many of whose bases could end up looking like the town of Pripyat near Chernobyl, no more imposing their will by force anywhere in the world, no more imposing fines on foreign banks and institutions for not doing things their way, no more money and arms for Israel, no more massive bonuses on Wall St etc. The rapid spread of destitution and poverty amongst the masses in the US means that a state of anarchy could well erupt that sees the mansions and citadels of the elites ransacked by the mob, and they are well aware of this possibility, which is the reason for the militarization of police forces across the country, as recently demonstrated in Ferguson, Missouri, and the stockpiling of vast quantities of ammo.
The biggest danger arising out of all this is that desperate people do desperate things, and the recent crude “gloves off” propaganda blitz is certainly a sign of desperation. It’s been a long time since a really big war and you can see from their increasingly reckless words and actions that they are lusting for it. It is one of the supreme ironies of this time that amidst all the maudlin sentimentality over the start of the 1st World War exactly 100 years ago, they are bringing us to the brink of another. Could it cross the line and go nuclear? – given the reckless aggression and brinksmanship already being displayed, that is certainly a possibility.
They can mass all the arms and missile batteries along Russia’s western border they like, perhaps promoting the paranoid notion that Russia wants to take back Eastern Europe, which it doesn’t, but it will never amount to anything more than a costly bluff, because if they ever dared attack Russia, then European cities would disappear under mushroom clouds. The underlying reason for such operations would probably be more lucrative contracts for the defense industry.
Remember, it wasn’t the elites who got killed in the 1st World War, it was the hapless young fools who thought they were doing the honorable thing going off to fight for their countries. So you’d better get good at seeing through the thick smog of propaganda in order that you understand what’s really going on and can take the necessary steps to protect yourself – if you don’t it could cost you and your loved ones more than just your property and investments, it could cost you your lives.
Will The US Succeed in Breaking Russia to Maintain Dollar Hegemony?
Clive Maund – 26 August 2014 – The Market Oracle
Evidently the latest big omission by the mainstream media is that a “hawk on Russia” has been appointed as European Council president.
EU leaders have appointed Italy’s Federica Mogherini as EU foreign policy chief and Poland’s Donald Tusk as European Council president.
The announcement came in tweets from the current council president, Herman Van Rompuy, at an EU summit.
Ms Mogherini, a centre-left politician, is Italy’s foreign minister. She will replace the UK’s Catherine Ashton.
Mr Tusk, Poland’s centre-right prime minister, has been Polish leader since 2007. He will chair EU summits.
Italy’s Mogherini and Poland’s Tusk get top EU jobs – 30 August 2014 – BBC
The EU yesterday (in yet another definition of democracy) picked its new president.
They chose Polish PM Donald Tusk, which may seem a bit strange since Tusk doesn’t speak a word of either English or French, and he comes from a nation that is not even in the Eurozone, yet he will now now get to chair meetings that concern the euro.
But Tusk is a hawk on Russia, and therefore suspiciously convenient to the inner core of Washington and Brussels’ control apparatus.
He’s said more bad and ugly things about Russia and Putin than just about anyone recently, and that’s saying something.
The US and EU have worked for years to see their desire to take over Ukraine come to fruition.
They’ve come a long way, but they wanted Crimea and the Donbass region most of all, and those they still don’t have.
Still, they’ve so far shown themselves more than willing to assist first in killing thousands of eastern Ukrainians to get what they want, and now they are prepared to start a war over it.

This appointment should dovetail well with another barrage of propaganda issuing from the NATO summit this week.
The upcoming NATO summit in Wales is a public relations stunt aimed at building a political consensus directed against Russia and to accuse the country of interfering in Ukraine’s internal affairs, according to Professor Michel Chossudovsky, director of the Center for Research on Globalization.
“The fact that Russia is not invited to the NATO summit indicates that the meeting is directed against Russia, and that’s the main objective of that meeting,” Chossudovsky told RIA Novosti.
“It’s not to say that the meeting involves any kind of military planning. The military planning will take place elsewhere. The purpose of that meeting is strictly public relations,” he added.

I sincerely hope he is wrong – although the history of propaganda tells me otherwise.
